ST-1200 Line Fastener Product Selector

ST-1200 Line Fastener components consist of a spiral-cam stud, a stud retainer, and a receptacle consisting of or containing a wire form spring.

As the stud is rotated, the 1/4-turn spiral cam engages the spring-wire receptacle and pulls it up and over the cam peak. The spring snaps into the detent at the end of the cam, holding the fastener in a firm locked tension. The cam peak resists opening rotation of a locked stud under vibration.

This form can be used to assist in determining the size of stud which will be required for your application. Fill in the requested information and click on the "Calculate" button. The results will be presented at the bottom of the page.

This process is the same as the Selection Procedure outlined in the catalog and on the ST-1200 Line page.

1. Select an appropriate head style.

ST-1200 Line studs in Sizes 3, 4, and 5, each in a variety of head styles, may be ordered as SE (Self Ejecting) assemblies. A stainless steel ejecting spring and a black plastic cup are sold attached to the stud. The SE ejection is partial, being limited by the length of the stud undercut not occupied by the cup, panel, and stud retainer. Ejection will normally be sufficient to give a visual cue of an unlocked stud. Also, ejecting spring tension holds an opened stud firmly, easing removal and replacement of vertical panels and panels with multiple fasteners.

3. Select a stud retainer:

Some criteria for retainer selection are:

  • Desirability of radial and axial stud play in the unlocked position.
  • Degree of protection needed for panel hole and outer surface.
  • Whether retainer may be allowed to cause a gap between stud panel and receptacle support, or must be absorbed into one of those materials or into the receptacle itself (nested).
  • Installed cost.

4. Select a receptacle type:

All of the ST-1200 Line receptacles provide the same optimum performance standards as listed in the performance table, so receptacle selection is primarily a matter of choosing the installation mode which provides the lowest installed cost, and perhaps finding a type that will fit in limited space.

If an enclosed receptacle is needed, selection is limited to the types available in the SU-2300 Line and the PA-3500 Line.

Note: Other types of receptacles are available but cannot be sized by this program. Please call for assistance.

5. Select an appropriate finish.

6. Now determine the Panel, Gap, and Support thicknesses.

Now determine the thickness of material in which the stud is retained and to which the receptacle is attached. Then determine the total gap between the level of stud head contact with material and the level of receptacle contact, in the closed position, include any air gaps and any part of the stud retainer thickness not buried in material already measured. Refer to the examples on each receptacle page, which will guide you to the length selection table.
